Interesting Evolution of Barbers and Barber Shops

Did you know that the word barber has been derived from the Latin word ‘barba’ meaning beard? Perhaps not, and there are many other such interesting things about the barbers and barber shops. Barber shops were not the grooming place for men’ a lot of debate, discussion and socializing used to happen in these places. In fact, there was a time when ‘barber surgeons’ used to even perform surgeries! It is only because of the development in the barber aids, especially for beards, that this is more to do with hair styling and haircuts nowadays. You see, the razors made it all easier for men to handle their beards and shaving. Here is a brief history of the evolution of this trade across the ancient to the modern ages. Haircuts for Men in Fairfax

History

Interestingly, the barber trade seems to go back to the Bronze Age, when in Egypt razors were found. The barbers used to be highly respected around the time. In Greece, men got their haircuts done in market places, where they could also socialize. Visits to the barber on a daily basis were as much important as the visits to the public baths.

Mostly, men of medicine used to do this and in the Middle Ages, the barbers used to even perform surgery and dentistry. It developed as a trade in the US afterwards and started an upward trend in the 19th century. There were many new trends that came in and in today’s age, it keeps going upward. The world’s first school of barbers came up in the United States in 1893, courtesy, A. B. Moler of Chicago. While earlier, only the basic trade tips and tricks were taught, later on, the whole thing was given a professional twist.

Most countries have dedicated barber schools nowadays that are used to train the aspiring hair stylists in all related men’s grooming techniques as well. In a few countries, the trade is usually passed from generation to generation. But, whichever part of the world it is in, a barber shop has evolved to go beyond mere haircuts or beard or mustache grooming. The Internet has kind of made the world smaller and everything is known to everybody. So, the people are informed and they walk in mostly having seen any trend or style that they want.
